Native to Asia, this tree with its grey-brown bark has very small, dark green leaves and flowers in small groups at the tips of the twigs. The fruit is an ovoid cone (4 cm), green then brown when ripe, with clasping scales. These large, pyramidal, evergreen trees were dedicated to Pluto, God of the empire of the dead, which explains why they are often found in cemeteries.
